Let’s face it. Most of us are in a slump right now because of this dreadful weather, which means this is the BEST time to take action on your closet! By the time it gets nicer out, the last place you’re going to want to be is inside your closet. Set a time and date, maybe get a friend and some wine and follow–this–list.
// ASK A QUESTION
Take the time to really look at what you have. Ask yourself, “is this even ‘me’ anymore?” Chances are, if you’re holding it, thinking it and asking it — it’s time to say goodbye. Do the pieces in your closet fit the image you are still trying to represent? Does it have stains, but you just can’t bear to let go? Once you’ve done this, move to the next step.
// FOLLOW THE 2 YEAR RULE
If you haven’t worn it in 2 years, YOU NEVER WILL! You will say you will, you won’t. You will have every intention to, but you won’t. It’s just how it happens. Chuck it.
// TRY THIS
Have you ever heard of the hanger trick? Start at the beginning of a month with all of your hangers facing one way. Whenever you wear an item and put it back, turn the hanger around. By the end of the month, take a hard look at the clothes on the hangers that are facing the original way. You can also use post-its for this as well.
// GET ORGANIZED
This is where divide and conquer comes in handy. Make 3 piles — toss, donate + sell. After you have everything you want to keep, color code your closet (by short sleeve/sleeveless and long sleeve). This will add structure and help you build your outfits while deciding what to wear everyday.
