My first time apple-picking was last year at this cute little place — Reisinger’s Apple Country, in Watkins Glen, NY. I went with some amazing ladies and this year I wanted to share that with my mommy [yes, I still call her “mommy”] and my little sister. We went, picked a gazillion apples, taste-tested a bit too much, and had a great time together.
One thing that my Grandma Ray and Auntie Kathy have always done is can their own homemade applesauce. I beg for it. Every. Single. Year. Along with homemade spaghetti sauce, hot pepper jelly, and salsa. Don’t get me wrong; my mom can cook, but she most certainly did not inherit this “canning-fanatic” gene. I, however, want my own crazy pantry full of fun canned, homemade deliciousness, so I decided it was time to learn. I borrowed a recipe from my gram and canning supplies from my aunt and set to work. I did it! I mean, I’m sure I could’ve done better, but it worked! Now I have my own canned, homemade applesauce!
Spend time with those you love. Make it count. And be sure to learn from them. Those are the things you’ll have for keeps. <3
